Captain’s Corner, the lecture series onboard our historic ship Olympia! 

Hear talks about naval and maritime history onboard a historic ship this summer! Offered once a month, from April through September, at 2 PM onboard Olympia in the captain’s cabin, the Independence Seaport Museum will host a variety of speakers all highlighting themes of relevance to our two historic ships. Admission includes self-guided access to the ship before or after the lecture. Check-in at the ticket booth in front of the historic ships.

The Naval Life and Leadership of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz

Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz is one of the most celebrated American admirals of the past century. As the commander in chief of the US Pacific Fleet in World War II, Nimitz orchestrated the naval campaign against Japan and commanded the largest force of warships in United States history. Join ISM, alongside Dr. Tyler Bamford, for an exploration of Nimitz’s storied career. Learn how he rose through the ranks to secure the most coveted role in United States Naval history and successfully welded together a team of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines to defeat the Japanese empire.

About Tyler: Tyler R. Bamford, PhD, is a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command. He earned his PhD from Temple University and previously served as the inaugural Sherry and Alan Leventhal Research Fellow at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. He is the author of Forging the Anglo-American Alliance: The British and American Armies 1917–1941 and has written numerous articles on the US military in World War II. He is currently editing the wartime letters of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz to his wife, Catherine, which will be published next year by the Naval History and Heritage Command.
